Before scheduling a repair or ordering parts, you’ll need your appliance’s specific model number. Every appliance has a metal or sticker label, called a rating plate or data plate, that contains the exact model and serial number.
Many homeowners mistakenly look at the large logo or numbers on the front of their appliance. However, these are simply brand names or product line designations, not the specific model identifier we need for accurate repairs.
At Dars Appliance Repair, we’ve seen countless service delays caused by incorrect model numbers. Here’s what to avoid. Don’t rely on your purchase receipt, the shipping box, or your owner’s manual. These documents often list product families or abbreviated codes rather than your specific model. Using incorrect information means we might arrive without the right parts, costing you time and potentially requiring a second visit.
Take a clear photo of your model number plate with your smartphone. This way, you’ll always have it handy when scheduling service or ordering replacement parts. Make sure the image captures all letters, numbers, and dashes clearly.
Most model plates are printed stickers or stamped labels affixed to the appliance. They typically include the manufacturer name, model number (labeled as MOD or Model Number), and serial number (labeled as SER or Serial Number), along with electrical specifications such as voltage, amperage, and frequency. The model number is usually a combination of letters and numbers and may look something like: WTW5000DW1 or PDB1600AWE. Record the exact model number from the tag, as even one incorrect character can affect part compatibility or service results.
Check your appliance type below to see exactly where manufacturers typically place the model number identification plate. Remember, you may need a flashlight for some locations!
The cooktop model plate is usually on the underside, so you may need to lift the cooktop or look beneath the front edge or the control knobs.
Open the door and check the frame around the opening, especially the upper-left edge. On ranges, the plate may also be inside the storage drawer or behind the kick panel.
Look on the inside wall at the top left, toward the back. On smaller units, the plate may be on the back; on others, it’s in the bottom-right corner at the front.
Open the door and check the inside wall on either side, along the side edge of the door, or the top edge of the door.
Check the cabinet door jamb first, then the inside left or right wall of the fridge or freezer section. On some models, it’s behind the lower crisper drawer or the kick plate.
The plate is often on the back of the control panel, on the left side near the bottom, or under the lid on compact models.
Check inside the door frame first, then the front, sides, and back of the cabinet.
Open the door and look along the inner rim of the door opening. If it isn’t there, check the lower front corner or side, or the back.
Check behind the door on the front edge, the upper left side, the back, or beside the control panel.
